Martha Vértiz

Martha Vértiz (San Pedro de Lloc, 1940 – Lima, 2022) was a Peruvian visual artist whose career developed from the 1970s onwards, exploring abstraction from a personal perspective that incorporated color, texture, and space as central axes of her work.

Martha Vértiz (San Pedro de Lloc, 1940 – Lima, 2022) was a Peruvian visual artist whose career developed from the 1970s onwards, exploring abstraction from a personal perspective that incorporated color, texture, and space as central axes of her work. She studied at the School of Fine Arts of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (1959–1963) and complemented her training at Cristina Gálvez’s Drawing Workshop (1979–1980) and Augusta Barreda’s Printmaking Workshop (1986–1988).

Her solo exhibitions include: Martha Vértiz, espacio y geometría, Palacio de las Artes, Miraflores (2023); Imagen y palabra, Galería Forum, Lima (2002); Arte abstracto (with Sonia Prager), Galería Trapecio, Lima (1997); Espacios propios, Galería Forum, Lima (1996); Desiertos, Galería Forum, Lima (1994); Estructuras, Galería 5, Caracas (1990); Perú mujer: arte contemporáneo, PromPerú, OAS, Washington D.C. (1988); Retrospectiva, Centro Cultural de la Municipalidad de Miraflores, Lima (1987); and Formas y texturas, Galería Trapecio, Lima (1974).

She took part in major international group exhibitions such as Fuerza de mujer en el arte contemporáneo, Embassy of Peru, Washington D.C. (2001); Estandartes Arte Contemporáneo del Perú, La Paz (1999); Presencia de la pintura
contemporánea peruana, Quito (1998); Mujeres en la plástica peruana, Caracas (1997); Homenaje a Juan Acha, Museo José Luis Cuevas, Mexico City, and Museo de Arte de Lima (1996); Perú, ayer y hoy, Palazzo Strozzi, Florence (1992); 21 Peruvian Painters, Museum of Modern Art of Latin America, Washington D.C. (1990); Pintura peruana contemporánea, Buenos Aires (1988); and the II Havana Biennial, Cuba (1986), among many others.

Her work is held in public collections such as the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI) and the Museo de Arte of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima. Vértiz’s production has been the subject of extensive critical bibliography, with texts by noted authors such as Mirko Lauer, Élida Román, Luis Lama, Ana María Portugal, Fietta Jarque, and Jorge Bernuy, among others.
