Alexander Apóstol at MOCA Grand Avenue with “Regime: Dramatis Personae”

20.09.2026 – 03.01.2027

Alexander Apóstol presents “Regime: Dramatis Personae” at MOCA Grand Avenue in Los Angeles, on view from September 20, 2026 through January 3, 2027. Organized by José Luis Blondet, Senior Curator, the exhibition presents a series of ninety black-and-white portraits depicting the archetypal figures of populist and authoritarian governments, not representations of specific individuals, but of the roles produced and performed under autocratic regimes.

Photographed in Caracas in 2017 with LGBTQ+ activists who modeled figures of their choice from the proposed dramatis personae, Apóstol dissects the gestures, postures, and body language through which political power stages itself. The portraits span Venezuela’s history from independence to the Bolivarian Revolution, and resonate with sharp urgency against the country’s most recent political upheavals.
