Maya Watanabe
Maya Watanabe (Lima, 1983) is a Peruvian audiovisual artist whose practice centers on video installation. Her work explores memory, displacement, and the politics of representation through immersive moving-image environments. She has presented her work internationally in institutions such as Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Matadero Madrid, and the Museo de Arte de Lima, among others. She has also participated in international festivals and biennials including Beijing Biennale.
In parallel to her artistic practice, she has developed audiovisual collaborations for stage productions presented in Peru, Spain, Austria, and Italy. She currently lives and works between Madrid and Amsterdam.

Since 2005, she has mainly focused on video, and her work has been shown at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Museo de Arte de Lima, SESC Belezinho and FIESP in Sao Paulo, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Cervantes Institute in Berlin, the CC. de España in Miami, Lima, Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires and Montevideo, and the Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Lima and Buenos Aires; as well as other institutions and museums in South and North America, Europe and Asia. Recent solo exhibitions include “Video Room: Maya Watanabe”at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo; recent group exhibitions include “Roppongi Crossing” at the Mori Art Museum, and “Canicula”, a commissioned project by Fondazione In Between Art Film, presented during the 61st Venice Biennale.
She has also participated in the Beijing Biennale 2009, Amsterdam Mediamatic Biennale 2009, and festivals such as Videobrasil 2011-2013, LOOP 2011-2012, FILE 2010-2011, TransitioMX 2009, Madrid Abierto 2008, and the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana 2013. Among the awards and recognitions she has received are the Res Artis Residency Prize, Kyoto Art Center -SESC_Videobrasil, Generation 2011, first prize at Videoakt Biennale 2011, first prize at Pasaporte para un Artista 2008, and second prize at Injuve 2009.
