Patrick Hamilton
(Leuven, Belgium, 1974) Patrick Hamilton studied art at the University of Chile. His work is characterized by a political interest that promotes the return of the social burden that abstractionism and conceptual art had at the time. With clear references to the artistic avant-garde of the 20th century, the artist develops critiques in which the economy of visual language allows him to be incisive and forceful with his ideas.

The works of the series Abrasive Paintings, for example, are made with black, white, red or yellow sandpaper with which the artist elaborates geometric patterns, almost always rectangular, alluding to bricks. An in principle innocuous design that hides an aggressive materiality, in a way that contrasts the “coldness” and simplicity of the rational design with a strongly emotional base. In broader terms, the artist seeks to make connections between this type of clashes and the contexts of the countries to which he is personally related, such as Spain or Chile, alluding to social problems and their historical roots.
Thus, through different media, from painting to urban intervention, Hamilton focuses his reflections on the analysis of political and social tensions.
He currently lives and works between Madrid, Spain and Santiago, Chile.
