Patrick Hamilton at “Quimeras – La Bienal del 74 como laboratorio social del presente”

We are pleased to announce the participation of Patrick Hamilton at the exhibition “Quimeras – La Bienal del 74 como laboratorio social del presente” at MAC Museum of Contemporary Art U Chile.
“The project emerged from a dialogue between the Italian artist Eugenio Tibaldi and the Chilean Patrick Hamilton, conceived on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the 1974 Venice Biennale. This marked a significant departure from the Biennale’s experimental and laboratory-like approach, as it represented the first instance of the Biennale deliberately adopting a political stance. This event represented a significant milestone in the history of one of the world’s most influential art institutions. It emerged as a prominent cultural manifestation in opposition to the Pinochet dictatorship, though this event has gradually receded from the public consciousness over time.
Quimeras is a two-voice project that interrogates the legacy of that event in the present day and its evocative capacity. It invites reflection on the reinterpretation and application of past messages to contemporary challenges, thereby stimulating an active debate on art and current issues. The central question under consideration is whether art can function as an effective bulwark of democratic resistance. The relevance of a political approach to art in the contemporary globalised era is a question that has provoked much debate.
The project has been granted financial support from the Instituto Italiano de Cultura Santiago and the Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Cultural y las Artes CONVOCATORIA 2025, and it is being facilitated with the assistance of the Italian Embassy in Chile and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation”.
